The breakdown voltage of a gas (the minimum voltage needed for a current to flow) depends on the pressure of the gas in the bulb. 👉🏻 Doubly Impossible Bottle: an amazing impossible object in my collection from craftsman/artist Grant Wicks. 👉🏻 Hyperbola Clock: one of the strangest timepieces in my collection featuring a straight rod which glides through a curved hole in this unconventional clock based on the hyperboloid, the 3D ruled surface traced by rotating diagonal line. 👉🏻 Lithophane Color Escher Print: another modern take on the lithophane technique from the 1820s. 👉🏻 Thermomotor Carousel: this decorative and dynamic centerpiece is actually a Curie point heat engine! When the portion of the magnetic ring over the flame heats up to a particular temperature (the Curie point) its magnetic field is temporarily lost until it cools, so the magnet near the candle is now pulled toward a cooler portion of the ring- which then heats up and the process continuously repeats creating the steady rotation. 👉🏻 Fulgurite: glass formation from when lightning strikes sand. One of only four ways to produce natural glass- volcanos, earthquakes (pseudotachylite from fault zones), meteor impacts (tektites and impactites), and lightning strikes (fulgurites). This fulgurite tube was collected from the Egyptian Saharan desert.
