Hey everyone! I'm going to start posting shorter videos, "art tip quickies" if you will, that will act as supplemental material to my longer videos. The goal is to provide you with easily digestible and immediately actionable tips and tricks from my studio to yours. For my first Art Tip Quickie I'm going to show you how to prepare sketchbook pages for oil painting. I've been devoting the majority of my studio time to painting in my sketchbook as a means to explore ideas without feeling pressured to create a finished work of art. On Instagram, Facebook, and Reddit I've received the question multiple times: "how to you seal your paper?" So, here it is. The process is really simple. All you need are: sketchbook; any brand is fine as long as it has sturdy paper, I'm using Moleskine a brush; I'm using an older Trekell flat and a polymer emulsion medium. I use Gamblin's PVA Size instead of matte medium, which tends to be the more popular medium used for sealing paper. Matte medium feels more like plastic; it is perfectly archival but I just don't like how it feels. PVA size is equally archival but retains the the texture of the paper, which I find pleasant to work on. Hope you enjoy this video. Let me know what you think and what other art tips you'd like to see :)
