Calne Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Wiltshire, and around five miles east of Chippenham, is the town of Calne. Geographically, Calne is situated at the western fringe of the North Wessex Downs, with the River Marden, a tributary of the River Avon feeding into Bristol, running through the town centre. At the heart of the town is the Parish Church of St Mary. This dates back to the 12th century with additions from the 14th and 15th centuries funded by wool merchants. The church is Grade I listed. From the medieval era, Calne had a thriving wool trade. This helped to shape much of the town, including the aforementioned extensions to the church. Water mills along the River Marden brought about further development to the local industry, but it ultimately fell into decline with the onset of the Industrial Revolution which saw towns in the north and midlands dominate. In 1863 a railway station opened in Calne courtesy of the Great Western Railway. This formed part of the Chippenham and Calne line - a short branch connecting to the main line at Chippenham. The station closed in 1965, along with the rest of the branch line, as part of the Beeching cuts, where over 2,000 stations across Britain were closed.
