Its main branch is located at the intersection of Wenchang South Road and Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street. Originating from the Guangzhou Grand Restaurant founded in 1935, it is renowned for its Cantonese cuisine and Mid-Autumn Festival mooncakes, earning the reputation of "the No. 1 restaurant in Guangzhou." After the Cultural Revolution, the restaurant retained its current name. It underwent renovations in July 1983, and the Guangzhou Restaurant Group Company was established in 1991. In 1935, Chen Xinghai, the owner of Yingji Tea Shop on Guangfu South Road, saw the potential of the former Hongsheng Temple site at the intersection of Wenchang Road and Shangxiajiu and founded the Southwest Grand Restaurant there in 1937. At that time, he hired the "King of Southern Chefs," Zhong Quan, and four of the "Four Heavenly Kings" of the dim sum world—Xuan Dongling, Li Ying, and Qu Biao—as chefs. The restaurant quickly gained fame, attracting many prominent figures. Zou Dianbang, the then president of the Guangzhou Chamber of Commerce, even commissioned a plaque inscribed "The No. 1 Restaurant in Guangzhou" as a gift. In 1938, the Japanese army captured Guangzhou, and the restaurant was destroyed by fire. In 1939, founders Chen Xinghai and Guan Lemin raised funds from various sources, along with Tan Qingbo, known as the "Second Generation Teahouse King" of Guangzhou, builder Luo Hengchuan, and industry figure Chen Zhonghan, among others, acquiring 108 shares totaling 54,000 yuan to rebuild and reopen the business. They renamed it Guangzhou Grand Restaurant, meaning "Food in Guangzhou," a name derived from the city's reputation for excellence. The famous general Cai Tingkai inscribed the words "Drinking Harmony and Eating Virtue" for the restaurant. In February 1951, shareholders including Cai Weihan raised funds to resume operations. In February 1956, it was incorporated into the public-private partnership. After the reform and opening up, in 1983, Guangzhou Restaurant adopted Hong Kong management methods for a comprehensive overhaul, taking out a 4 million yuan loan for store renovations. In 2017, it was listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange main board. In 2019, it fully acquired another long-established Guangzhou restaurant, "Tao Tao Ju." On March 21, 2023, Guangzhou Restaurant Wenchang Branch suspended operations to begin renovations.
