When the Air Force first wanted Phantom jet fighters, they gave this capable McDonnell jet the nomenclature F-110A, and the name Spectre, in keeping with McDonnell's tradition of other-worldly apparition nicknames. From an Air Force source, here's film B-Roll the first of two marked F-110As being painted and rolled out into the brisk St. Louis winter in January 1962. As delivered, this F-110A used part of its original Navy BuNo (carrying 49405 on its vertical fin). Before the year was done, the American armed services agreed on a joint designation system that saw all of these McDonnell jets called Phantom II under the new designator F-4, regardless of which branch of service. This jet later carried USAF serial number 62-12168 as an F-4B. Have you subscribed to the Airailimages Channel on YouTube? Thanks!
