He is known for being one of the last traditional Lakota, in the way he did everything, even down to the way, he was born. He is a great Medicine Man, who taught his son, Leonard Crow Dog all that he knew and he helped in the revival of the Ghost Dance, in 1974. Grandfather Henry was dedicated to helping his people, the Brule tribe and the rest of the Oc̣eti Ṣakowiƞ. He was born on the Rosebud Reservation, to John Crow Dog and Jumping Elk, in the traditional Lakota way.. and was married to Mary Gertrude, another full-blooded Lakota, in June of 1921. They had 12 children together, but, almost all died before them, with only three, Leonard, Diane and Christine out-living them. They lived near the Little White River, in a log house that Henry made himself, with plenty of room to have all kinds of ceremonies. In 1970, Chief Crow Dog introduced and taught Dennis Banks, a Leech Lake Indian Reservation Ojibwe' and a leader in the American Indian Movement about the Lakota religion. The home of the Crow Dog family is situated on the Little White River, ten miles south of Rosebud, South Dakota. At the entrance to the little valley rises a huge, 'man-high', truck tire, painted white, topped by a buffalo skull. Painted on the tire, in black letters are the words: "Crow Dog's Paradise, how kola." How Kola means: "Welcome, friend" and indeed, everybody is welcome, at Crow Dog's Paradise. ------------------------------------------------ **** I claim no ownership of any of the photos, clips, video and music expressed in this video...and employ my borrowing of them with much respect and thanks.
