Desert Pea Media is very proud to announce the third release from the 'Break It Down' project series, straight outta Cowra, NSW. This campaign was developed to create awareness and conversation about well-being and mental health for Indigenous young people in Western NSW. The program was designed to create inter-generational dialogue around community, culture and identity and to break down some of the stigmas attached to mental health. 'What We Can Do' was created in January 2018 via a 5 day Desert Pea Media storytelling workshop. Co-written by, and starring an incredibly talented group of young Indigenous people and local community members in Cowra, NSW - with support from DPM staff. Desert Pea Media projects involve a dialogue-based storytelling process that encouraged participants to analyze 'the real', 'the ideal' and 'the bridge'. In simple terms this means critically thinking about how to create positive change for yourself, for each other and for our communities. The project was funded by the good people at Western NSW Primary Health network. 'What We Can Do' is a nod to the leaders of the resistance - the freedom fighters of Erambie Mission and Western NSW who fought for Indigenous rights for decades. This story talks about the importance of knowing and understanding your cultural heritage, of celebrating diversity, and of working together to create an inclusive and positive popular culture. In a context where mental health is at crisis point for young Indigenous Australians, and the pressures of living in two worlds are bigger than ever, Cowra Crew wants to remind us to remain connected to ourselves, our culture, our history, our family and our country. This project featured the expert musical direction and production of DPM producer Josh Nicholas (aka Hazy) who has produced music for all 'Break It Down' productions. We thank you brother for you vision and hard work. Special thanks to Harry Williams, The Cowra PCYC and the people of Erambie Mission. Respect and gratitude to all the Wiradjuri people. Big love to all you mob, and thanks again for having us on country once again. LYRICS Yamma Dumarung we the underdog – on the Calaire River ‘Eagle on the Rock’ Fist in the air for Erambie old people, who fought for years for our mob. Us black fellas know where we’re from. Gunna shake a leg to our dreamtime song My people, Kin – I’m proud and strong from the country plains where I belon All my elders from Eranbee Mission - started up the fight. Self - determination, freedom, basic human rights. Look at how far we’ve come. It’s easier said than done. My kin fought with blood and fist so we can dance beneath the sun. Who are you? Know where you’re from, know where you’re going Who are you? Connection to your culture will get you through it My identity – you can’t take it. My connection – you cant break it My foundation - you can’t shake it. look at this future we created. Look at this situation, since invasion Massacre, stolen generation Racist government legislation all across this sacred nation It’s no wonder my mob - keep getting caught up in this cycle The Western way of thinking’s gammin, like a downward spiral You gotta remember your roots. They’re pumpin’ through your veins Bounce back, step up on that track, bringing it back to the ancient ways Gotta connect both the old and new. Find a way, got to get us through. Gotta get up, dust it off and show the world what black fullas can do How many acres? 32!! How many acres? 32? Gotta get up, dust if off and show the world what Cowra Mob can do!!!
