For the uninitiated, Elevator Action Returns is a classic 2D side‑scrolling shooter released in 1994 by Taito, later brought home to the Sega Saturn in 1997. While it does share some basic similarities with it's early 80s predecessor, the gameplay in this revision is much more varied and refined. The player can toss grenades to clear entire floors, pick up new weapons and health, and ignite environmental hazards that can leave your foes feeling a little toasty. What I appreciate the most is how methodic the gameplay feels. While on the surface the gameplay may seem like it offers a fast or chaotic appeal like other run-and-guns, this isn't really the case. You end up slowing your pace just to make sure you don’t step on a mine, fall down an open shaft, or get flattened by an elevator you weren’t expecting. Best of all is the soundtrack. The music is stylish, punchy, and instantly memorable—one of those scores that elevates every moment without overpowering the action. It’s the kind of soundtrack that sticks with you long after the credits roll and is often enough to entice me to play it again months later.
