I love this tune and so do my students. They eventually help me sing this song and choose their own birds. We talk about the song being quite sad and how we can also have sad times. What i love about this some is that even though it is sad, it is also comforting as the birds are sharing their woes, finding they have things in common and I think, in that connection there is relief. “Oh”, said the Blackbird, sitting on a tree, “I had a wife as well as thee But she grew fickle and never came back And ever since then my head’s been black.” “Oh”, said the Redbird, sitting on a tree, “I had a wife as well as thee But she grew fickle and away she fled And ever since then my head’s been red.” “Oh”, said the Bluebird, sitting on a tree,! “I had a wife as well as thee But she grew fickle and away she flew And ever since then my head’s been blue.” “Oh”, said the Greenbird, sitting on a tree, “I had a wife as well as thee But she flew away and never was seen And ever since then my head’s been green. “Oh”, said the Whitebird, sitting on a tree, “I had a wife as well as thee, But she eloped on a stormy night And ever since then my head’s been white.” “Oh”, said the Graybird, sitting on a tree, “I had a wife as well as thee, But she grew fickle and flew away And ever since then my head’s been gray.” “Oh”, said the Yellowbird, sitting on a tree, “I had a wife as well as thee, But she flew away with another fellow And ever since then my head’s been yellow.” “Oh”, said the Brownbird, sitting on a tree, “I had a wife as well as thee, But she flew away into the town, And ever since then my head’s been brown.”
