Especially during COVID-19 the ability to test fast and determine risk quickly is the difference between a child seeing their parent or not, or giving someone the right kind of care sooner rather than after it’s too late. At Visby Medical researchers have produced a diagnostic tool simple and small enough that it can be used by anyone, anywhere. In 2013 Visby Medical Founder Adam de la Zerda, PhD first had the idea to develop a small, handheld, easily useable test kit. By 2017, the team had their first functional prototype – a PCR test that fits in the palm of your hand but delivers rapid results at or even before the point of care. Based on this success Visby Medical received NIH funding to submit the device for FDA authorization in March 2020 for its application in sexual health. Then COVID-19 hit, and the need for rapid testing became ever more urgent. With a wealth of expertise and interest on infectious diseases, Visby Medical quickly began work on a handheld COVID-19 test. By July the test had been completed, and FDA authorization had come through. It’s this kind of innovation that’s key to improving our response to infectious disease - COVID-19 and beyond, and Visby is now looking for innovative healthcare providers to bring this to patients.
