John & Yoko dived into political activism with gusto. Sometimes, like with this song, he combined it with blistering rock'n'roll. The song was started as far back as the trip to India, and John and Paul are seen working on it during Get Back. There are elements of I Am The Walrus's wordplay. Of course, even in his acid days, this wasn't new to John, having published 2 books of surrealist poetry. It is, however, the only time he really combined it with protest. The Imagine album's other angry track, How Do You Sleep?, has a snarling string arrangement, but here the band is left raw, with George Harrison's stinging guitar solo amongst his greatest playing. The song, in our era of political hellscape, feels as relatable as ever. It was cathartic to scream into a mic for 5 mins.
