First Nation Band file a title claim over the ENTIRE municipal area of Kamloops, B.C.

On November 5, 2025, the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation filed a civil claim in B.C. Supreme Court seeking a declaration of Aboriginal title over the entire City of Kamloops, Sun Peaks Resort, and surrounding private lands—an area of roughly 100,000 acres affecting 100,000 residents and thousands of fee-simple titles. Premier David Eby’s verbatim response (First Nations Leaders Gathering, Nov 5): “The court decision… has created some uncertainty about 150 private property owners and their title in Richmond… For our part as government, we need to ensure that there is clarity about the fee-simple ownership of property… At the same time, we also need to recognize that our forebears politically displaced the Secwépemc people from a plot of land unfairly and unjustly… We’ve done it before on Haida Gwaii… I do believe there is a path forward.” Key facts: DRIPA (2019) + UNDRIP Action Plan (2023) have been explicitly cited by judges as legal foundation.
