A playthrough of Acclaim's 1993 versus-fighting game for the Super Nintendo, Mortal Kombat. Played through with Johnny Cage on the default difficulty setting. The release of the first Mortal Kombat game in the arcades was the first title to give Capcom some real competition in the arcade fighting game arena after Street Fighter II appeared, and it differentiated itself in many ways. The one that really drew the players in, though, was the style of the graphics. Completely unlike the cartoony, hand-drawn sprites used in SF2, you had digitized images of actors wailing away on each other, spilling gallons of thick red blood across the screen with every hit. It introduced fatalities (which really don't need any introduction at this point), the four-button high/low strike system, and a number of other things. In short, it was exactly what Street Fighter II needed for competition, and over the next several years, both games improved a great deal thanks to it. Both games received solid ports on the home consoles, though Mortal Kombat's was somewhat less well received than SF2 on the SNES. Most decry the lack of blood and the censored fatalities in the SNES version. While they were cool, I never really cared about the changes. The game still felt pretty close. The controls were a bit stiffer, but the moves and combos all still worked, and (with exception of the near-arcade perfect port for PC) it still looked damned close to the arcade cabinet. The Genesis version was a bit faster and kept the blood in, but totally changed the music and the graphics suffered pretty badly in the conversion. Which is the better port? It all depends on your preferences, I suppose. I prefer the SNES version, but there are many out there that prefer the Genesis version. They're both good. Just different. The original Mortal Kombat, like Street Fighter II, was a pioneer and a heavy influence on the industry. But, just like Street Fighter II, though it's still completely playable today, things have evolved quite a bit beyond the MK series' callow debut, and the passage of 25 years doesn't really do it many favors. It certainly does scratch the nostalgic itch, though! ____ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
