At last week’s CUPGRA Conference 2025 in Cambridge, Hassan Awashra of NIAB played a key role in showcasing the next generation of research talent within our industry. Rather than delivering a single technical paper, Hassan led and co-ordinated the PhD Student Network session, “Sharing Knowledge, Shaping Research,” bringing together early-career scientists to present their work, exchange insights, and engage directly with growers, agronomists and industry leaders. His focus was on creating a platform for emerging researchers — ensuring their ideas, innovations and perspectives contribute to the future direction of potato and root crop science. The session highlighted the energy, expertise and fresh thinking coming through the pipeline, and the importance of supporting new talent within the sector. A brilliant contribution to a conference that continues to drive collaboration and progress across the UK potato industry. CUPGRA unites the UK potato industry to fund essential independent research and give members access to the latest potato science and innovation.
