Brazil is facing a crucial challenge: a shortage of truck drivers. This lack of professionals has a direct impact on road freight transport, the pillar of national logistics, and has negative repercussions on the economy, such as delays and increased operating costs. The causes of this shortage are multifaceted, but converge on one point: unfavorable working conditions. Exhausting workdays, long hours on the road and lack of recognition discourage new professionals and drive away those already working in the field. To understand this issue in depth, we invited truck drivers themselves to share their experiences and perspectives. Their voices reveal the daily challenges, the difficulties faced and the reasons that make the profession increasingly less attractive. The shortage of truck drivers in Brazil is a complex problem, caused by several factors that discourage the profession and make it difficult for new professionals to enter the market. The main reasons include: • Challenging working conditions: The truck driving profession is known for its long hours, stress, and physical exhaustion, in addition to the lack of adequate infrastructure on the roads, such as rest areas and food. • Low pay: Many drivers believe that the pay does not compensate for the risks and difficulties of the profession. • High costs: The costs of becoming a professional driver are high, including obtaining a National Driver's License (CNH) in categories C, D or E, in addition to specific courses and training. • Lack of incentives and training: There is a lack of incentive and training programs to attract new professionals to the field. • Road safety: Violence and cargo theft on Brazilian highways are a concern for many truck drivers. • Aging of the driver fleet: Many truck drivers are close to retirement, and there are not enough young people entering the profession to replace this workforce. • Increased demand for road transport: The growth of e-commerce and Brazil's dependence on road transport to transport its production have increased the demand for truck drivers. This shortage of professionals could have a significant impact on the Brazilian economy, affecting cargo transport and the supply of various sectors. To try to solve this problem, the government and industry entities need to implement measures such as: • Professional training and qualification programs. • Improvement of working conditions and infrastructure on the roads. • Measures to increase highway safety. • Incentives to attract young people to the profession. It is important to emphasize that the shortage of truck drivers is not a problem exclusive to Brazil, but is a global challenge that affects several countries.
