Many undergraduate and graduate students seek out opportunities to get involved in research and may find themselves working in research labs. While much research that is produced and published comes from labs or teams of researchers working together, we are never explicitly taught how to create, manage, or organize a research lab. This semester I assisted Dr. Tammy Ellis-Robinson in managing a research lab on two projects: reflective skills of teachers and website accessibility for parents of students with disabilities. A team of seven individuals made up our lab, consisting of one assistant professor, two doctoral students (myself included) and four undergraduate students. I was given the task of figuring out an efficient way to organize our lab’s projects, weekly tasks, time, and communication. Several platforms and applications were used to carry this out including Slack, Trello, and Google (Calendar, Docs, Drive, Sheets, and Slides). This presentation will explain how to use these apps together to effectively improve the communication and efficiency of research within the context of a research lab.
