March 28–30, 2025 | Climbers: Nick, Kelsey, DH Choi This is to share our three-day adventure to summit Mount St. Helens via the Worm Flows route—the only accessible trail during the snow season. Whether you're planning your first snow climb or looking for a late-winter getaway, here’s a rundown of logistics, timing, food, and gear to help you prepare. And huge thanks to Michelle for organizing all the logistics (flight tickets, rental car, Airbnb, etc.) and packing food for us. This trip won't be possible without you 😉 Itinerary Overview Day 1 – Travel & Prep (Fri, March 28) 6:00 AM: Early flight to Portland International Airport (PDX) via United Airlines from Newark International Airport, NJ Got a rental car and drove 50 miles from Portland to Cougar, WA – the small but vital gateway town to Mt. St. Helens. Picked up snowshoes and ice axe rentals at Lone Fir Resort (reserved in advance) Checked in at a cozy Airbnb near Cougar at 4 PM Caught a beautiful sunset at 7:34 PM and enjoyed a steak dinner to fuel up Day 2 – Summit Day (Sat, March 29) Sunrise: 6:54 AM | Sunset: 7:34 PM Had 누룽지 (scorched rice) for breakfast Left Airbnb at 5:30 AM and drove to the Worm Flows trailhead From Cougar, continue on FR 90 until the intersection with Forest Road 83. Turn left on FR 83 and continue approximately 6 miles to the Marble Mountain Sno-Park. Started hiking at 6:50 AM — a full-day snow climb, returning to the Trailhead at around 7:15 PM Returned rental gear at 8 PM Ramen dinner back at the Airbnb Day 3 – Return (Sun, March 30) Boiled egg breakfast and left the Airbnb at 4 AM, drove back to PDX Returned the rental car and flew back at 9 AM (Alaska Air), arriving at Newark Airport at 5:22 PM Drive home to wrap up a weekend adventure Gear & Food Notes: Fuel: GU gels (x4), Nature Valley bars (x2), boiled eggs (x2), trail mix, cheese & meat snack pack, 62 oz water, 2 Liquid IVs Equipment: Snowshoes, Crampons, Microspikes (didn't use it), Ice axe, hiking poles Rental Car: Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Lodging: Airbnb in Cougar/Yale Lake – clean, spacious, and perfect for groups Cougar, WA: Tiny village but essential stop – there is only one gas station, deli, café, restaurant, and gift shop in Lone Fir Resort (gear rentals) Tips for Climbers: Climbing permits for quota season (above 4800 feet) are required from April through October—we went just before the quota kicks in. A self-issued permit is available at the Marble Mountain Sno-Park Trailhead from November through March. A Sno-Park parking permit ($25/day) is required and can be purchased online between November 1 and April 30. You can reserve your snow gear rental (ice axe, snowshoes) at Lone Fir in advance. Trailhead to summit is a long day – carefully plan your hydration, nutrition, and timing. Have questions about snow climbing Mt. St. Helens?
