Once the undisputed pride of the south coast, the benchmark for academy excellence, and the envy of every club outside the elite, Southampton have fallen from grace since the glory era of the mid-2010s. A series of mistakes over the last six years, perhaps more notably in the last two, culminated in relegation last season, and there is precious little trust in the current regime to put things right. On the flip side, however, the Saints go into the Championship with a squad which, while top-heavy, is oozing with quality for the level, and the club could gain 9-figures from player sales this summer as well as the parachute payments they come down with.
