But we can still compare them on three criteria: Maneuverability, Efficiency, and Speed. Spoiler alert: Bats' flexible wings supported by the finger bones give bats a huge edge in maneuverability versus all but the most agile birds. But that maneuverability comes at the expense of efficiency - bats can't fly as far on the same amount of energy as birds can (though disclaimer, I did find peer-reviewed papers supporting both sides, but a greater number of more recent ones were all in favor of birds). And finally, speed. There's a couple of contenders, but the fastest bat is much faster than the fastest bird under normal conditions.
