On this Palm Sunday — a day that carries both quiet joy and deep reflection — I share one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most intimate chorale settings: “Vater unser im Himmelreich”, BWV 737 This piece is based on the Lutheran hymn of the same name, a musical meditation on the Lord’s Prayer. Bach treats the melody with great simplicity and clarity, allowing the chorale to unfold in a calm, almost contemplative flow. BWV 737 belongs to the tradition of Bach’s chorale preludes, short liturgical works intended to introduce or reflect upon a hymn within the church service. These pieces were not written for the concert stage, but for real moments of devotion — and that spirit is still very much alive in this music. For this recording, I used the beautiful Polná organ by J. D. Sieber (1708) (via Hauptwerk). Its warm and transparent Baroque character perfectly suits the introspective nature of this chorale.
