Mira laying on stretcher in an ambulance STORYLINE: She was fading in and out of sleep, traces of bruises still visible on the side of her face. A bandaged nose, with a tube in one nostril. One hand bandaged, and both with cannulas inserted in them. Ten-year-old Mira Abu Oukal lay on a stretcher, looking visibly tired. The grey blanket with bright pink flowers covered up most of her small body. She was finally on a plane on her way to a new hospital. Mira is one of 1,000 children from Gaza who will be treated in the United Arab Emirates after being injured in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. Mira left her house in north Gaza as Israel retaliated to the October 7 attack by striking the Gaza strip daily. Weeks of heavy aerial bombardment and a ground invasion have demolished vast swaths of northern Gaza and killed thousands of Palestinians. When it became unsafe to stay in the north, Mira left with her family to central Gaza. On October 27 she was sitting with her mom and sister, looking at videos on their phones, when a strike hit their neighbour’s house. The strength of the explosion sent Mira flying and then slammed her onto the ground. “My sister sustained a skull fracture, a fracture in the face, her nose was broken, and she suffered a brain haemorrhage. Two days later she went into surgery where they removed a part of her skull to stop the bleeding,” says Naheel, Mira’s older sister, as she sat on the Etihad Airways flight that is meant to take them both to the UAE. After initial treatment in Gaza’s hospitals, it became very hard to get the care that she needs there. Hospitals in Gaza suffered major shortages in equipment and were overcrowded due to the high number of injuries. Many hospitals were also hit by Israeli strikes, as Israel claims Hamas has tunnels under the buildings.
