The most common type of malignant bile duct tumor is cholangiocarcinoma, which can be further classified into: 👉 Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma This type occurs within the liver and arises from the bile ducts inside the liver. It accounts for approximately 10-20% of all cholangiocarcinomas. Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, jaundice, and weight loss. 👉 Perihilar Cholangiocarcinoma Also known as Klatskin tumor, this type originates at the junction of the left and right hepatic ducts, just outside the liver. It is the most common type of cholangiocarcinoma, accounting for 50-60% of cases. Symptoms may include jaundice, abdominal pain, and weight loss. 👉 Distal Cholangiocarcinoma This type develops in the bile ducts closer to the small intestine and represents around 20-30% of cholangiocarcinomas. Other rare malignant tumors of the bile ducts include: 👉 Gallbladder Cancer This cancer originates in the gallbladder, which is connected to the bile ducts. It can invade the bile ducts and cause similar symptoms to other bile duct malignancies. 👉 Bile Duct Lymphoma A rare type of cancer that arises from the lymphatic tissue within the bile ducts. It can cause symptoms like abdominal pain, jaundice, and weight loss. 👉 Bile Duct Sarcoma A rare cancer that arises from the connective tissues within the bile ducts, including leiomyosarcoma, angiosarcoma, and others. Treatment of malignant bile duct tumors depends on factors such as the type, location, stage, and overall health of the patient. Treatment options may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, or a combination of these approaches.
