Hi vintage geeks and drummers! Wanted to spread the word about these lovely orange Orange drums. Since the information online is so poor I wanted to show my kit and tell you what I know about their history. What we’re looking at is a 1970’s Vintage “Orange” Drumkit. Manufactured in France in the later part of the 1970’s by company “Capelle” and sold by British amp manufacturer Orange. The early kits were labeled “Orange London” on the logo but shortly after became just ‘Orange’ (Made in France) as seen on a close up pic in the beginning of this video. Other availablecolours were yellow, blue, red, white and black. There were both regular and concert tom kits. Shells are 4-ply African Mahogny without reinforcement rings. Bearing edges are all round profile. Quite light in weight but the sound is very fat and kind of muddy. Late 1970’s punk or early 80’s new wave comes to mind when you hear them mic’d up. I don’t have any information at all of people who has been using these drums except for Wishbone Ash drummer Steve Upton.... Oh and I believe Swedish prog rockers “November” used them. I bought this kit as a 9 piece in 2004. Kick: 24 x 14” Snare: 14” x 6,5” Concert Toms: 10 x 8” 12 x 9” 13 x 9” 14 x 10” 15 x 12“ 16 x 14“ Floor Tom 18 x 16” I could not believe my ears when I about 10 years after purchasing the kit got a tip from a friend that a Orange 24” bass drum had been sighted at the local second hand market. Went there in a hurry and got it for 150 swedish crowns, thats about 20$ :) The original hoops were so sharp that I often used to cut myself quite bad when the adrenaline of a live gig got the sticks flying. As you can see in the video, my playing style is as far from schooled and ergonomic as you can get :) Since my knuckles were in serious trouble with the original hoops I swapped all of them for S-hoops which sets my mind at ease a bit when I’m about to throw my hands over those toms. If you have any information about these lovely drums, please share it with me, in a PM or in the comment section. Thanks for watching!
