One of the first of its kind CT scanners in the US is now available for patients in Southwest Florida. “It delivers less radiation to the patient, gets better images, better reconstructions,” said Dr. Shant Manoushagian. It’s called the Pro.Pulse. It’s able to take higher quality images faster thanks to dual source technology. “The CAT scan is basically like a donut and a single source scanner is just one X ray signal rotating around the donut, taking pictures with a dual source scanner. You have two signals coming around the donut so it's you need less of a rotation to get the full heart scan,” said Dr. Juan Gaztanaga. If patients experience chest pain, this non-invasive CT scanner allows cardiologists to look inside the arteries to determine if there is any plaque buildup. “If we know that a patient has a minimal amount of plaque, we can start medications that kind of halt that process and hopefully prevent events, prevent heart attacks and strokes and things of that nature” said Dr. Manoushagian. Although the Pro.Pulse is at Lee Memorial Hospital, “Our vision is to expand to dual source system wide,” said Dr. Juan Lopez-Mattei. You can learn more by visiting leehealth.org/heart.
