DALLAS: Season 4 (1980-81) Clip (Who Shot J.R.? - The Reveal)

These are the final moments from "Who Done It?", the fourth episode (58th overall) from the fourth season of the mega popular 1978-91 CBS soap saga "Dallas". The reception of the episode saw 83-90 million television viewers tune in and became the most watched television episode in television history for three years. It ended up becoming unseated by "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen", the series finale of the CBS 1972-83 ensemble sitcom "M*A*S*H". The episode originally aired on Friday, November 21, 1980. At the end of "A House Divided", the third season finale which aired on Friday, March 21, 1980, deceitful oilman John Ross "J.R." Ewing, Jr. (Larry Hagman) had managed to invoke the ire of several people in Dallas. Among them were members of his own family, his long-suffering wife Sue Ellen Ewing (Linda Gray), and his mistress Kristin Shepard (Mary Crosby), who happened to be Sue Ellen's younger sister. Also looking to end him were members of the oil cartel he was a part of for investing in Asian oil wells that wiped out their fortunes, yet Ewing Oil profited heavily from them before the wells were nationalized. That night, an unknown assailant slipped into the Ewing Oil offices and shot J.R. twice at point blank range. Sue Ellen is arrested and booked for attempted murder shortly thereafter. With the assistance of her brother-in-law Bobby (Patrick Duffy), her mother-in-law Eleanor Southworth "Miss Ellie" Ewing (Barbara Bel Geddes), her sister-in-law Pamela Barnes Ewing (Victoria Principal) and her psychiatrist Dr. Ellby, Sue Ellen is able to piece together the events of the night in question. She makes a beeline back to Southfork, where she runs into a wheelchair bound J.R., who threatens to call the police, but she assures that she isn't trying to hurt him and just wants to know her sister's whereabouts. Right on cue, Kristin shows up to bring Sue Ellen her things. Incensed, Sue Ellen recalls to both Kristin and J.R. about the night of the shooting. She remembers being very drunk and toting J.R.'s pistol looking for him. Krisitn gives her the drink she poured for her and takes the gun away from her sister. Later that night, the shooting at the office occurs. The camera pulls back to reveal that Kristin was the person that shot J.R. The next morning, while Sue Ellen was in the shower, Krisitn placed the gun back in her closet, knowing someone would find it. Shell shocked, J.R. still reaches for the phone to call the cops, but Kristin warns him against it, lest he wants his child to be born in jail, revealing a shock of her own: she's pregnant with J.R.'s child. Sue Ellen tries to wrestle the phone away from J.R., determined to not go to jail for being framed by her sister. J.R. says that no one is going to jail and vows to handle Kristin in his own way. The success of this episode took "Dallas" all the way to #1 at the end of the 1980-81 TV season. Also, Larry Hagman took the time to heavily renegotiate his salary for the show due to his newfound success.
