I do not own the copyright to this recording. This slideshow is for historical and educational purposes... and maybe just to laugh at. Daddy Stovepipe with his recording of "Sundown Blues" made on May 10th 1924 (Richmond Indiana), the second "country" or "rural" blues song with guitar accompaniment ever recorded. Beaten by just a month by Ed Andrews and "Barrelhouse Blues" ( • Ed Andrews Barrel House Blues (1924) ) recorded either in late March or early April 1924. (The first ever country blues recording was made by Sylvester Weaver who recorded two blues instrumentals, "Guitar Blues" and "Guitar Rag" on the 2nd of November 1923.) So apart from Sylvesters recordings, one might call Daddy the "Buzz of Blues"... (Aldrin) ;-) Johnny Watson, alias Daddy Stovepipe was born in Mobile, Alabama, on April 12th 1867 and died in Chicago, November 1st 1963. A veteran of the turn of the century medicine shows, he was in his late fifties when he became one of the first blues harp players to appear on record in 1924. He later recorded with his wife, Mississippi Sarah, in the 1930s and spent his last years as a regular performer on Chicago's famous Maxwell Street, where he made his last recordings. Lyrics: ---------- Mama I woke up this morning : mama had the sundown blues Woke up this morning : mama had the sundown blues And my fair brown told me : I refuse to go Mama I had so much chicken : mama cackles in my sleep So much chicken : mama cackles in my sleep You don't like my potatoes mama : oh don't you plow so deep I got nineteen fair browns : said I want you all to know Nineteen fair browns : I said I want you all to know Mama if you want to see me : mama I'll let the nineteen go Now you see my little fair brown : tell her to bring me meat my little fair brown : tell her to bring me meat When the wintertime gets here : I'll wear the B V Ds /haWkaN
