It was created and served to the child star it was named for: Shirley Temple. Shirley was Hollywood’s top box-office draw from 1934 to 1938. She had nothing to do with the creation of her namesake drink and found it too sweet for her tastes. So, this riff on the kid’s menu classic swaps the store-bought grenadine for a fruit-forward homemade version and replaces the ginger ale with ginger beer for a little extra burn and zing to cut through the sweet.
