Who doesn’t feel good when they get flowers? It’s valentine’s day and I want to encourage you to not wait for someone to give you flowers … I’m inviting you today to go buy some for yourself or a loved one, or head into your garden and pick some if they’re available. I personally don’t agree that we should wait for Valentines Day to do this, every day should be an opportunity to show love in one form or another – to yourself or to others. Giving flowers to yourself or someone you love is a beautiful gift that can leave you feeling good for different reasons. Today, I buy some for my 7 year old son and his little face lights up. Of course, I also then get to enjoy them so it’s a gift for me essentially too. Other days I buy some randomly for myself just because. Want proof flowers make you feel good… well in 2005 a professor (Professor Jeannette Haviland-Jones) sent out three different types of packages—a candle, a fruit basket, or a floral bouquet—to 147 different women. The recipients had all participated in one of her recent psychological studies, so they were sent under the guide of a ‘thank you’ gift. But they weren’t actually gifts; they were variables. And the delivery men carrying them weren’t couriers, they were observers, measuring each recipient’s facial expressions. The findings of the study - Those who got the flowers unanimously exhibited the same reaction - a genuine expression considered by psychologists to be “the sole indicator of true enjoyment.” In fact, three days later, the flower group felt happier than the other two groups.
