The NDRF teams from Pune have been deployed at the site, however the incessant rains and water has obstructed the rescue operations. The primary reason for the collapse seems to be the high pressure due to the flooding of Savitri river. The bridge over the Savitri River on the Mumbai – Goa highway collapsed late Tuesday night. Several vehicles, including two buses ferrying dozens of people are believed to have been swept away in the collapse. Traffic on the highway has been disrupted after the collapse. The Savitri River flows through the Konkan region in Mahad. NDRF teams were rushed from Pune and are engaged in search and rescue operations at the spot. They are, however, facing some difficulty owing to heavy rains and consequently a traffic pile-up. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is closely monitoring the situation and has been providing updates of the government’s efforts on Twitter. “Spoke to Raigad SP and Collector about bridge collapse on Mumbai – Goa Highway. Administration has rushed to spot for rescue and immediate measures,” Fadnavis said. The chief minister said that the primary reason seems to be the high pressure caused due to flooding of river Savitri due to heavy rains in the catchment area of Mahabaleshwar. “There were two parallel bridges; one is a new bridge and one constructed during the British era. The old one collapsed.” “There is no confirmed assessment about casualties,” the chief minister added. "Why were warnings of the weather bureau ignored ? The state government is responsible for this tragedy," he said. Minister for Public Works Eknath Shinde told reporters that a structural audit of all bridges in Maharashtra been ordered after today's tragedy. Two state transport buses with 22 people have gone missing after the vehicles were swept away in the swollen Savitri river in Konkan region (Raigad) as an old bridge collapsed at Mahad late last night bringing traffic on the stretch to a halt. At least two buses and several other vehicles went missing near Mahad city after a bridge on the Savitri River collapsed early Wednesday due to torrential rains in the Konkan region. The bridge, more than seven decades old and a critical link to the Mumbai-Goa national highway, crashed around 1 a.m. due to the flood waters rushing into the river. Two state transport buses with 11 passengers each were missing and there was no contact with either their drivers or the passengers, Raigad Collector Sheetal Ugale said. Since the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation buses -- which started from Mumbai -- did not arrive at their scheduled Mahad depot, Ugale appealed people to get in touch with the concerned authorities about their missing relatives. Locals said that around five to six private vehicles were also missing and they were feared to be washed away in the floods. A search operation have been initiated, Ugale said. "The bridge was built during the British era. After discussion with the National Highways Authority, we have shifted traffic to the new parallel bridge nearby. We are trying to confirm reports of other missing vehicles," Ugale said. Rehabilitation Minister Chandrakant Patil said helicopters would be deployed and the help of defence forces was taken to search the missing vehicles. Meanwhile, a 45-member National Disaster Response Force team reached Raigad from Pune to assist in the rescue operations. Incessant rains continue to lash the coastal Konkan, northern and western Maharashtra since past five days.
