I spent 5 months alone in a van through the Arctic winter — and this was one of the coldest, strangest stretches of the entire season. A Siberian cold front pushes into the far northeast of Norway, bringing extreme temperatures even to the Arctic coast. Frost smoke rises from the frozen landscape, strange ice crystals drift through the air, and the borderlands near Russia feel as remote and haunting as anywhere I’ve ever been. I drive east toward the Russian border to experience this harsh and mysterious corner of the north for myself — camping off-grid in deep winter conditions, watching strange objects below the northern lights in the border zone, and spy places where military watchtowers and frozen rivers make the landscape feel tense, surreal, and almost unreal. I walk out into the icy border zone... From Kirkenes, the Russian borderlands to the Finnish interior, the cold only deepens.
