She was the daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, Oxford. The man who wrote her story kept her name encoded in the text, photographed her in ways that still generate arguments today, and was banished from her life under circumstances so damaging that both families spent decades destroying the evidence. Her mother burned every letter he ever wrote to her. Pages were torn from his diary. An unknown number of photographs were destroyed after his death. And Alice herself — the real woman behind the character — buried two sons in France, sold her manuscript at auction to survive, and died at eighty-two with a headstone that doesn't mention Wonderland.
