Apple Variety Spartan

Spartan was raised in 1926 at Summerland in British Columbia by R C Palmer, from a cross between McIntosh and Yellow Newtown Pippin. It is similar in flavour and texture to Golden Delicious but has a better flavour and a lovely red colour which shines on rubbing (but don't do this if you want to store it!). good annual cropper, good pollinator for other varieties, keeps well, but tends to be small unless thinned and sadly is susceptible to scab, which in a bad year can damage up to 100% of the crop. I canot recommend planting this variety unless you have a dry sunny climate with no troubles from apple scab, or you are prepared to use fungicide spray. A popular apple with children due to its pretty colour and smaller size. It is worth having in a collection especially if you like a crunchy, vinous American style apple. When ripe there is a hint of honey to the taste, but it is not a rich spicy flavour like the Egremont Russet, whcih I much prefer (and so do most of my customers).
