From Perpetrator’s Coercion to Victim’s Lack of Consent? l D. Alaattinoglu & H. Kainulainen
In this keynote, doctor Daniela Alaattinoğlu and docent Heini Kainulainen discuss the main findings of a 2019-2020 research project at the University of Turku, commissioned by the Finnish Ministry of Justice. The project investigated how reported sexual offences fare in the Finnish criminal process and why so few reported cases lead to a guilty verdict and a sentence. In connection to the ongoing review of the chapter on sexual offences in the Finnish Criminal Code, discussions on consent-based legislation have surfaced. In the light of the findings of the earlier-mentioned project, the speakers welcome such debates, but caution about focusing solely on criminal law amendments in the work to curb sexual violence and redressing victims' harms.
