Located at 1,740 meters above sea level along the historic Georgian Military Highway, it serves as a gateway between Georgia and Russia. Nestled in the dramatic upper valley of the Terek River and surrounded by the towering peaks of the Greater Caucasus, Kazbegi is famed for its breath-taking scenery. Its most iconic landmark, the Gergeti Trinity Church, stands high above the valley against the backdrop of Mount Kazbek (5,047 m), a dormant volcano and one of the tallest peaks in the Caucasus. A popular destination for trekkers and outdoor enthusiasts, the area features alpine meadows, the Gveleti Waterfalls, Juta and Truso valleys, and mineral springs. Rich in Georgian tradition and folklore, Kazbegi also offers the charm of rustic villages, local cuisine, and the warm hospitality of mountain communities. Perched at 2,170 meters on the slopes of Mount Kazbek near Kazbegi, Gergeti Trinity Church is one of Georgia’s most iconic landmarks. Built in the 14th century, it exemplifies Georgian Orthodox architecture with its cross-cupola design of dark grey stone and subtle ornamental details. The complex—comprising a church, bell tower, and ramparts—was strategically placed high above the Terek River Valley to safeguard it and serve as a refuge for sacred relics, including the cross of Saint Nino, during invasions. Set against a stunning backdrop of snow-capped peaks and lush valleys, the church offers breath-taking views and deep spiritual resonance. Inside, traces of 16th-century frescoes and icons, alongside newer artworks, preserve its religious heritage.
