Access and sourcing: cornerstones for investigative reporting The Southern Africa Accountability Journalism Project (SA | AJP) hosted a training session on the importance of securing access to proper sources and strategies for using sources appropriately when producing an investigative exposé. Proper sourcing is foundational to investigative journalism. Sources shape what can be discovered, verified, and ultimately published. The success of an investigation often depends on a journalist’s ability to access information that is deliberately obscured or difficult to come by. Sourcing, then, is about identifying where - or with whom - valuable information resides. It is about accessing that information in an ethical way, testing its veracity and presenting it to a reader clearly to make a deliberate point. Solid sourcing will endow any reporter with the confidence to write a compelling exposé. At the same time, poor sourcing leaves reporting vulnerable to error, challenge, or dismissal. This training session will examine how journalists may identify, secure, manage and present valuable source material to aid their investigations. Date: Thursday, 19 February 2026
