Crystal Red Reverie The candles had already burned low when Kael arrived. The great wolf stood silently in the doorway of the marble chamber, rain clinging to the dark fur along his shoulders. The storm outside rattled the tall windows of the manor, but inside the room everything felt strangely still—like the world itself had paused to watch what would happen next. At the center of the room sat a great white bathtub. Steam curled through the air like ghostly fingers, and floating atop the crimson-tinted water were hundreds of rose petals. She was waiting for him. Lyra. Her silver-brown fur shimmered in the candlelight as she leaned back in the bath, half-submerged. Long dark hair clung to her shoulders, and her golden eyes found him instantly, as if she had known the exact moment he would arrive. “You took your time,” she said softly. Her voice carried the calm of someone who had already made peace with their fate. Kael stepped closer. Each step echoed through the chamber. “Lyra… what have you done?” A faint smile curled on her lips. “Exactly what we both knew I would.” He noticed the champagne bottle first. Two crystal glasses rested beside it, their golden liquid untouched. But it was the dagger lying on the marble floor that made his chest tighten. Its blade was stained. The water in the bath was darker than it should have been. Kael’s ears lowered. “You’re dying.” Lyra tilted her head slightly, amused by the obvious. “I was dying the moment I chose you.” He knelt beside the bath, the scent of roses and iron filling his lungs. Outside, thunder rolled across the sky. For a moment neither of them spoke. Their lives had always been like this—beautiful moments balanced on the edge of disaster. Two wolves bound together by a love that had burned too brightly for the world around them. They had betrayed packs. Broken laws. Crossed lines that could never be uncrossed. The world had turned its back on them long ago. Lyra reached up slowly, resting her paw against his chest. “I didn’t want them to take this from us too.” “Lyra…” His voice cracked. “You could still run,” she whispered. Her golden eyes searched his. “You always were the stronger one.” Kael looked down at the water. The rose petals drifted lazily around her like tiny crimson stars. Then he looked back at her. “You think I would leave you here alone?” A quiet laugh escaped her. “I hoped you wouldn’t.” Kael stood slowly. He removed his coat and stepped into the bath without another word. The water rippled around him as he sank down beside her, the warmth mixing with the cold rain still clinging to his fur. Lyra leaned against him immediately, her strength fading. Her heartbeat was weak now. “Still dramatic,” she murmured. “Still stubborn,” he replied. She reached for one of the glasses, lifting it carefully before pressing it into his paw. “A toast?” “To what?” Her smile softened. “To the only thing we ever did right.” Kael raised the glass. The crystal chimed softly as they touched them together. Outside, lightning illuminated the room in a brief flash of silver. They drank. Then Kael pulled her closer, resting his forehead against hers. The candles flickered as the storm raged beyond the walls of the manor. Time passed quietly. Eventually the glasses slipped from their hands and shattered softly against the marble floor. The last candle burned down to nothing. And when the storm finally faded, the chamber fell into perfect stillness. Two wolves remained in the silent bath, surrounded by roses and crimson water. Together. Exactly as they had chosen.
