I've been steam-bending wood for over 4 decades, but I'm still learning new tricks. For every new bending form I make, I add some new ideas to try out. In this video, my employees, Jack and Jamis, demonstrate how my new bending machine works. The problems I wanted to address in designing this machine are three-fold; 1- Gain enough leverage to compress the wood on all sides at once. 2 - Squeeze the part on its sides to eliminate the compression wrinkles. 3 - Eliminate the bulging on the compression side in extreme bends. 4 - Allow me to bend drier wood so they spend less time drying in the forms. 5 - Minimize or eliminate the need for another machining process to correct distortion during the drying process. 6 - Separate the compression strap from the form so that the leg can removed and hung to dry without the strap on and without having to take it off the form. The result: We were able to bend these hard maple chair legs that tapered from 2" down to 1.25" over their 36" length with no failure at all. The bending radius at the center thickness of 1.650 is 15 ". We could start the steam process with the legs at 10% MC. After bending, we dried for a week in our hot room. They came off the form at 6% MC, zero spring back, and dead square their full length. That was over 2 years ago (when we took this video). I just used the last of the bends from this run in January this year. They had been in our shop unsupported all that time, including the months of extreme humidity after Hurricane Helene's visit (our shop is right by the river). Still, there was no springback, and all of them were square enough to avoid the need to true them up. I will continue to play with variables, but this development is exciting.
