PPE vs. PPFD: Which one is more important? The most concerning factor for growers is PPFD mapping, which is the core indicator for evaluating the quality of plant growth lights. Hello everyone, first let's understand PPE and PPFD. Photosynthetic Photon Efficiency (PPE) measures the efficiency of converting electrical energy into light energy. Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD) measures the quantity of photons reaching the plant canopy. These two measurements are important factors to consider when purchasing LED plant grow lights for indoor plants. In practical applications, only the light that reaches the plant canopy or surface is useful. Therefore, PPFD is a more useful indicator compared to PPE in the market of grow lights because PPFD tells us how much light enters the plant canopy per second. Only by measuring the PPFD maps formed by different test points within the growing area can useful comparisons be made between plant grow lights. Let's make a comparison. In the PPFD map below, the black text represents a photosynthetic photon efficiency of 2.9 umol/J, while the red text represents a photosynthetic photon efficiency of 2.7 umol/J. The PPFD map shows that despite lower photosynthetic photon efficiency, the actual application effectiveness is better due to the use of the Koray secondary optical system. Professional growers have reached a consensus that PPFD maps tested in real-world application scenarios are the core and practical indicators for comparing plant growth lights in the market.
