Veins are blood vessels that carry blood to the heart from internal organs and tissues. Arteries carry oxygen and nutrients from the heart to the rest of the body. The walls of the arteries are made up of three layers. The smooth innermost layer is called endothelium. The adventitia is the outer, fibrous connective tissue layer. The middle layer is made of elastic fibers and smooth muscle cells, which provides for elasticity of the blood vessel. Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease, characterized by a decrease in the elasticity of the walls of arteries. Atherosclerosis also causes narrowing of the arteries due to thickening in the wall, between the middle layer and the endothelium. Atherosclerotic plaque, which forms inside arteries, decreases the lumen of these blood vessels even more. Atherosclerotic plaques form mainly within inside of an artery and damage the whole structure of the vessel. Sometimes, large plaques can lead to injury of the inner wall of an artery. Plaque may break away from the arterial wall and be carried away in the bloodstream. This can result in clogging of arteries in another location. The damage of endothelium starts formation of blood clots at the site of the injury. These clots can block the flow of blood through the artery.
