One road, one day — from blue skies in Christchurch to alpine rain at Arthur’s Pass. This scenic drive takes you from Papanui Christchurch city across the wide Canterbury Plains and into the heart of New Zealand’s Southern Alps along State Highway 73. Video date: 22 October 2025 00:00 Christchurch 21:34 Waddington 23:50 Sheffield 25:36 Springfield 28:14 Porters Pass 37:56 Castle Hill 43:06 Lake Pearson 58:05 Arthurs's Pass National Park 1:05:09 Arthur's Pass Village 1:13:50 Otira Viaduct The journey begins on a fine day with beautiful drifting clouds, as the road passes through rural towns such as Sheffield and Springfield, and climbs steadily over Porters Pass. Along the way, the dramatic limestone formations of Castle Hill (Kura Tāwhiti) rise from the high country, a place of cultural significance to Ngāi Tahu and a well-known filming location for The Lord of the Rings. Nearby Lake Pearson (Moana Rua) mirrors the sky and surrounding hills, offering a quiet, open landscape before the mountains close in. As the drive enters Arthur’s Pass National Park, the weather begins to change and light rain sets in—an experience typical of this alpine crossing on the Main Divide. The shifting weather highlights the park’s unique climate, where moist air from the West Coast meets colder alpine conditions, often bringing sudden rain, mist, and low cloud. Established in 1929, Arthur’s Pass is one of New Zealand’s oldest national parks, known for its steep valleys, waterfalls, braided rivers, and dense beech forests. The rain softens the landscape, deepening colours and adding atmosphere as the road winds through Arthur’s Pass Village, once a base for railway workers during the construction of the historic Otira Tunnel. The journey concludes at the Otira Viaduct, a striking modern structure designed to protect the fragile alpine environment while offering dramatic views into the mist-filled Otira Gorge—perfectly capturing how rapidly changing weather is part of the raw beauty of this route.
