🏥 Cryptorchidism occurs when one or both testicles do not descend into the scrotum, remaining in the abdomen or inguinal canal. If a testicle has not descended after 18 months, there is little chance that it will descend on its own and this horse is then considered a cryptorchid. 🥜 This condition can cause significant health issues such as testicular cancer, hormonal imbalances, and behavioral problems due to retained testicles producing testosterone. Undescended testicles are not fertile, but will produce hormones, often times causing these horses to be more aggressive. 🥜 A cryptorchid castration is a surgical procedure to locate and remove the undescended testicles, ensuring the horse's overall health and preventing future complications. This surgery is more complex than a regular castration, and must be performed by a specialized surgeon.
