Bangladesh is voting in its 13th Parliamentary elections in what is being described as a defining moment in the country’s political journey. Interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus cast his vote in Dhaka, calling it “a day of liberation” and the beginning of a new dream for Bangladesh. However, the elections have been marred by controversy. By noon, voter turnout in five Dhaka constituencies stood at just 27%, raising concerns over public participation. Serious allegations of midnight ballot stamping have surfaced against Jamaat-e-Islami workers, with reports of stamped ballots recovered in Jhenaidah-4. In Noakhali, a journalist was allegedly assaulted while trying to document irregularities. Violence has also erupted in multiple locations — including an explosive attack at a polling station in Gopalganj that injured security personnel and a minor, and clashes in Dhaka’s Mirpur-10 constituency. Intelligence inputs warn of possible attempts by terror-linked elements to disrupt the polls, while security forces and army personnel have been deployed across sensitive regions. With nearly 127 million eligible voters, this election is seen as a critical test of Bangladesh’s democratic transition after the political upheaval of 2024.
