The focus of this segment is the HBCU connection to Ghana --historically (Kwame Nkrumah attended Lincoln University), the role alumni organizations are playing in the country and opportunities to study abroad on the continent. The hosts are proud HBCU alumni! Muhammida El Muhajir, a graduate of Howard University, first studied at the University of Ghana in 2003 as an International Affairs graduate student and then moved to Ghana in 2014 after a 1 year fellowship at an incubator for Africa Tech Startups. She is a member of Ghana's Howard University Alumni Association. Christa Sanders, a Spelman alumna and member of AKA Soroity Inc., has had a career in international education moved to Ghana as the Associate Director of New York University's Ghana campus followed by 10 years in the role of Director of Webster University's Ghana campus. Araminta Society takes it's name from abolitionist, activist, and 'Queen Mother' Harriet Tubman, born Araminta Ross and a descendant of Ghana’s Ashanti people who escaped US chattel slavery and led 13 missions to rescue around 70 enslaved individuals, including her own family and friends. In the spirit of Harriet/Araminta, these conversations aim to inspire and uplift those seeking freedom in the land of our ancestors.
