Can you tackle this insanely steep, rugged hike of North Carolina legend? When I lived in Morganton, I was aware of the Linville Gorge ruggedness, including the infamous Pinchin trail. There are deeper and longer gorges in the eastern United States, but none with a terrain as steep as Linville. From the Linville River to the peak of Hawksbill, the terrain rises more than it runs, exceeding that incredible 50% grade. Our marked Pinchin Trail takes a path that is more bearable, but only slightly. Even here, you will encounter long stretches approaching 40% grade. That’s brutal for a hiking trail. But what do you expect from the Grand Canyon of the East? It clearly shows that the difficulty of this hike lies within the climb. Even with the modesty of other factors, the treacherous ascent earns this trek a very strenuous label. The scenery, however, is stunning as it captures some of the best outcropping views of the Linville Gorge. Music: https://www.purple-planet.com
