After much delays and distractions doing other things I finally divide my schedules enough to cover another segment of that king of that king of Disused railways, the Woodhead route. The explore resumes at Penistone where I had left off seven months earlier. I have decided to re-include the remains of the GCR platforms still lying lost underneath the trees plus a couple of the features that didn't get covered in June 24's jaunt before releasing the brakes on the way further west. One special standout on this route is the two former level crossings at Thurlstone and Shore Hall where track survives in the roads, which the mud and tarmac respectively has failed to conceal - the latter also still hosts us a wonderful white cottage and crumbling crossing gate from the day . Further round the corner we reach Bullhouse Bridge there is a tale of tragedy to end the video with and I don't mean the fact that the current TransPennine trail bridge over the road has still been awaiting repair after three years. On July the 16th, 1884 the carriages of a London bound train derailed at the scene, crashing and disintegrating down the side of the embankment and bridge killing nearly 25 people. Looking at the structural strength of the typical railway vehicle ( or lack of ) for that era one has to wonder how the casualty levels would compare if a similar accident had occurr ed later on instead, during the electric age - sadly itself a fatality of Britains railway map. #woodhead #WoodheadRailway #disusedrailway #WoodheadRoute #Penistone #Thurlstone #ShoreHall #BeechingCuts #Barnsley #SouthYorkshire #DavesDeadLines #DavExplores #DaveAttrill
