Fall Fertility Decisions | Managing Phosphorus, Soil Biology, & ROI When Prices Are Working Against

Field Talk Friday | Final Episode of the Year | Dr. John Murphy | Rethinking Phosphorus This Fall As harvest wraps up and the dry spreaders fire up, the conversation turns—What do we do with dry fertilizer this fall? In this final Field Talk Friday of the year, Dr. John Murphy takes a deep dive into phosphorus management, especially as fertilizer prices run high and commodity prices stay flat. This isn’t a sales pitch. It’s a straight conversation about what happens in your soil, what happens inside the plant, and how you can think differently about pulling back on P—without pulling back on yield. 🧪 What You’ll Learn in This Episode: ✅ Not All Phosphorus Is Created Equal There’s more phosphorus in your soil than you realize. The problem? Most of it is unavailable to the plant. Murphy breaks it down into three key pools: Plant-Available Phosphorus – Small, soluble, and what your plant actually absorbs Organic Phosphorus – Locked inside organic matter; needs biology to break it free Inorganic/Unavailable Phosphorus – Bound to iron, calcium, or buried in soil structure “It’s not about how much P is in the soil—it’s about how much your plant can actually touch.” ✅ How to Activate What’s Already in the Soil Murphy explains how to unlock more P without necessarily applying more: Organic matter P = released via enzymes from soil microbes Inorganic P = released via organic acids secreted by fungi and bacteria The key to both? A healthy, biologically active soil “We have to stop thinking about fertilizer in isolation. It’s the soil system that moves it.” ✅ Three Ways Plants Actually Take Up Phosphorus Spoiler: phosphorus is not mobile in soil. Understanding how plants acquire P can reshape your management: Diffusion – Very slow in most soils Mass Flow – Only works with enough moisture Root Interception – Your roots must physically touch the phosphorus So, to increase phosphorus uptake, you need to: Improve root growth Increase the effective root zone Leverage biology that extends the root’s reach ✅ Mycorrhizal Fungi: The Natural Phosphorus Network Murphy breaks down how mycorrhizal fungi colonize roots and extend their reach by yards, not inches. These fungal networks also secrete enzymes and acids to free up bound phosphorus. “If your roots touch 5% of the soil, mycorrhizal fungi take you to 25%. That’s yield. That’s ROI.” ✅ Is This the Year to Pull Back on Fertility? Maybe. But don’t do it without a plan. Murphy challenges farmers to think beyond the rate and ask: What have I built in the soil over the last 5 years? What am I doing this fall to support root development and biology next spring? Am I using tools (like enzymes or biology-based inputs) to make the most of what’s already in the soil? 📌 Practical Takeaways: If you’ve built soil fertility, this may be the year to pull back—but don’t cut blindly. Know your P pools and how much of your soil P is actually plant-accessible. Manage for uptake: focus on root architecture, soil health, and biological activity. Consider enzyme and acid-producing microbes or fungi to keep phosphorus in motion. It’s not just about what you apply—it’s about how you help the plant get to it. “Pulling back is a financial decision. But unlocking what you already have is a management one.” 📣 Join the Conversation: Are you cutting back on phosphorus this fall? How do you manage biological activity in your soils? Are you building roots—or just hoping they grow? Let us know what you’re planning. Field Talk Friday is about learning from each other—because these decisions carry weight all the way into next year’s harvest. 🔔 Subscribe to AgXplore’s YouTube Channel Thanks for tuning in this season. We’ve walked through corn pollination, soy pod retention, phosphorus pools, cover crops, drone strategy, and more. We’ll be back with more content, more conversations, and more in-field agronomy you can take to the bank. 👍 Like this video if your fertilizer bill made you think twice 💬 Comment with your fall fertility plan—or your questions 📤 Share with your agronomist, retailer, or neighbor who's rethinking P this fall #FieldTalkFriday #AgXplore #PhosphorusStrategy #FallFertility #SoilBiology #MycorrhizalFungi #SoilHealth #FertilizerPrices #CropNutrition #EnzymeTechnology #BiologicalAgronomy #RootZoneManagement #AgX #SoilScience #FarmingSmarter
