Yousuf Salahuddin was born on 1 November 1951 in Lahore, Pakistan. He was first elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan in 1988 and served as the Federal Minister for Education from 1993 to 1996. He retired from politics in 1997 and has since been involved in various social and philanthropic activities. Main Yousuf is well known for his contributions to the promotion of the art and culture of Pakistan. Unlike other public figures, he left corporate societies in uptown Lahore to move to the famous Haveli Barood khana in the Walled City of Lahore. The Haveli itself is a masterpiece of art and aesthetics and Yusuf has done justice to it by opening it for art and cultural events. Family Background Salahuddin’s family has a long history of political and literary engagement. His maternal grandfather, Allama Iqbal, was a well-known poet and literary scholar. His paternal grandfather, Mian Amiruddin, was the first Muslim Lord Mayor of Lahore. His father was among the main organizers of the Jalsa of 23rd March Resolution Day. Salahuddin is also a distant relative of the Taseer family, from which the ex-Governor of Punjab, Salman Taseer, hailed. He is also related to third Governor General of Pakistan Malik Ghulam Muhammad who from the finance ministry became the Governor General of Pakistan. Grandson of Allama Iqbal Allama Iqbal is one of the most renowned poets of the Urdu language and is considered to be the national poet of Pakistan.
