Amid rising tensions between the United States, Israel and Iran, a strange maritime incident unfolded in one of the world’s most sensitive oil routes. An oil tanker carrying crude from Ras Tanura Port toward India suddenly disappeared from tracking systems near the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel — Shenlong Suezmax Oil Tanker — was transporting around 135,000 metric tonnes of crude oil. Reports suggest the captain temporarily switched off the ship’s Automatic Identification System (AIS) — a system that normally broadcasts a ship’s identity and location to satellites and maritime authorities. For several hours, the tanker effectively entered “dark mode”. When the AIS signal came back online, the vessel had already crossed the most dangerous stretch of the route. Soon after, the tanker safely reached Mumbai Port, delivering crude oil to Indian refineries. The incident highlights how fragile global oil supply chains can be — and how critical the Strait of Hormuz remains for global energy security.
