With the generous support of Service Canada’s New Horizon’s for Seniors Program, Centre[3] presents an intergenerational community arts project called [D]irect [M]essage--in which dozens of personal stories about Barton were collected and converted into a twenty-three minute narrative audio-visual soundscape piece about the rise, fall and subsequent current resurgence of legendary Barton Street. The piece is a culmination of the 12 week Direct Message community arts project delivered by Centre[3] in partnership with The Barton Street BIA, St. Matthews House, Hamilton Youth Poets, and the Hamilton Public Library. The project included storytelling and spoken word workshops, as well as personal one-on-one interviews conducted with seniors & youth, allowing seniors to act as mentors to the younger generation in Hamilton--encouraging crucial social participation among otherwise isolated seniors. Direct Message uses the arts to empower and encourage seniors to share their memories and stories about Barton Street. Using art as a vehicle, seniors transferred their knowledge and experiences of Barton Street to a media soundscape that was presented in the community in December, and at The Trocadero Restaurant--the topic of much passionate discussion among the project participants--as part of the Frost Bites Festival in February.
