We recently discovered that our 3 bee colonies had contracted varroa mite, unfortunately a little too late. The varroa destructor was detected around July 2022 at the port of Newcastle, previous cases it was detected early enough to eradicate it, however it’s not the case now, it’s here for good and Australian bee keepers must now learn how to manage their colonies. This is now our second rodeo with varroa, we lost our first 2 colonies in 2022 when we lived in Newcastle, our hives were one of the first that contracted the mite and had to be shut down by NSW DPI. This has been another upsetting blow for us again, but I won’t let it deter us from setting up again when the time is right. My important message to other apiarists out there, is to do regular testing by alcohol wash or sugar shake, especially as we are about to enter spring. I would also suggest to prick open a few capped brood to search for mites that can’t be seen that might be inside feeding off brood. Feel welcome to provide any tips you can share for other novice bee keepers like myself in comments below. Happy bee keeping, Chris #bee #bees #beekeeping #varroa
